About the Project

Hello! Thank you for checking out my blog. My name is Janessa Bretner and I am currently working on my Bachelors of Education. I have taught abroad in Korea for a year and am interested in understanding how international teaching experience shapes teachers practice.  I intend to use this blog to disseminate knowledge and information I gain from completing my summer research.

Here is an overview of the project.

Study abroad programs allow students to experience and gain an understanding of a different culture. Reflective writing can facilitate the learning from these experiences. Limited long-term follow-up research is available to gauge the influence of studying abroad programs on teaching practice. Teaching Across Borders (TAB) is a program at the University of Calgary that provides pre-service teachers an opportunity to teach in other countries. The goal of this project is to investigate the impact of TAB experiences on program alumni (1-3 years post return), specifically their teaching philosophy, professional development, and career satisfaction.

I plan to recruit TAB alumni for this study and will conduct interviews with participants to have them reflect upon their TAB experiences with respect to their current teaching practice. Participants will be asked for additional consent to access previously-collected data (writing pieces, interviews and blogs) for comparison with newly-collected data.
